A family favorite straight from Grandma’s handwritten recipe book. She always says, "Spies for pies" (plus Mcintosh) and she is right, those old Michigan varieties bake down perfectly.

Ingredients
Apple layer:
8 sliced apples (Spies or McIntosh)
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Topping:
2 sticks butter
2 cups sugar
2 cups flour
4 eggs
Instructions
Preheat oven to 300°F and grease a 9x12 pan.
In a bowl, mix apples with 1 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nuts. Spread the mixture evenly in the pan.
On the stove, melt butter. Add 2 cups sugar, flour, and eggs; stir until combined and smooth.
Pour the batter evenly over the apples.
Bake for about 1 hour, or until lightly browned and bubbly around the edges.
Serve warm with a dollop of Cool Whip or vanilla ice cream.
