Grandma Dick's Apple Dessert

A family favorite straight from Grandma’s handwritten recipe book. She always says, "Spies for pies" (plus Mcintosh) and she is right, those old Michigan varieties bake down perfectly.

Ingredients

Apple layer:

  • 8 sliced apples (Spies or McIntosh)

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Topping:

  • 2 sticks butter

  • 2 cups sugar

  • 2 cups flour

  • 4 eggs

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F and grease a 9x12 pan.

  2. In a bowl, mix apples with 1 cup sugar, cinnamon, and nuts. Spread the mixture evenly in the pan.

  3. On the stove, melt butter. Add 2 cups sugar, flour, and eggs; stir until combined and smooth.

  4. Pour the batter evenly over the apples.

  5. Bake for about 1 hour, or until lightly browned and bubbly around the edges.

  6. Serve warm with a dollop of Cool Whip or vanilla ice cream.
